Deadman Wonderland, Vol. 2

Done and done. I really enjoyed editing this one. My favorite (you have to view this one big):

The rest of the gallery is in my Otakon 2009 con coverage gallery, here:

Please note: What I've started to do is to put "photoshoot" pictures in the main galleries to make one big photo-dump. From my site's stats it appears that most people go for the con coverage galleries first, so the photoshoots don't get much attention outside of the fewer people who care to browse through them. Naturally I want to increase cosplayers' exposure as much as much as possible, so I am going to have the photoshoots duplicated to their own gallery where appropriate.

AMA Photos

In the interest of planning ahead, I'm open to photoshoot requests at AMA.

For the usual crowd: Hopefully you aren't tired of me yet ^_^ Please call to get in contact with me anytime during the con and I'll do my best to rush over, camera in hand. I'm coming prepared with two lightstands and two off-camera flashes this time, so the creative options are greatly expanded. I may even bring my studio flashes and see if I can't set up in a corner for a little while.

For those I haven't had the pleasure of meeting: Please PM me with the details, such as your availability and the cosplay you plan to wear.

Thanks!

(no subject)

I'm making this post mostly to organize myself. You'll see I've listed names and then cosplays that we'll be photographing "for sure." For some of them I have notes and questions afterward - if you'd like to respond in the comments or by PM that's fine.

I apologize in advance if I have mis-labeled or mis-remembered. Plans seem to change so frequently that I haven't been able to keep up. And if I can avoid using Excel spreadsheets to plan my cons I will do so at all costs =P

Photoshoots for:

Soul Eater Group - dreamerworld, you said you want to accompany me on this one right?

Kurzeshaar (Motoko) - Is this the only one?

Mintflavored (Lu Bu)

Fire Lily - I don't think we conclusively discussed anything. Let me know =)

MissDragonblade (I have an idea...) - PM me a list, Y/Y? =P

Tenshinoitami1 (I have an idea, but there are so many *cry*)

Vk_loli (as herself)

Orionflame, plus MGS crew (Wolf)

Natalie (no idea!) - Do you guys want to do the Trinity Blood stuff we missed at AUSA or have you scrapped that?

Ryuu (Gazette, Cloud) - I believe these were the two you mentioned to me.

Sana K. (Misa)

Bur Loire (no idea) - Am I doing shots for the Crew as well?

Sweetsailormars (Lolita) - Is there gonna be J-rock stuff mixed in too?

...bring the coffee. Now, I know I'm missing some people in here whom I normally get at least a few shots of, and some individuals I have forgotten. Again, please drop me a note and I'll update the list. I'd just like to have a baseline so I can find more free time to take more photos =P

Thanks!

Vampire Knight

Well, I've finally completed all Nekocon photoshoots. w()()T! I'll upload all the crack shots in a little while and post another link to them here.

Thanks again to all of you excellent cosplayers who made the whole experience fabulous and hilarious and entertaining. Cosplay, of course, IZ SERIUS BIZNIS, but that doesn't mean you can't take a break from rationality every now and then ^_^

I can only hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Thanks =)

Photography 2009 or How I'm Going to Go Broke and Love It

With no cons left planned for the remainder of this year it is high time that I jumped on the planning bandwagon and posted my schedule for 2k9. It looks very busy!

Photoninjitsu )
Katsu is going to start the year off with a bang. Although I am hopeful that the schedule will be more relaxed than I currently envision it, I get the impression that every waking moment will be spent doing private shoots.

With that in mind, I'm going to do the scheduling somewhat differently. Instead of posting 'shoot times, I will post my availability for each con as their schedules become finalized during which time we can get together and get some photos. For each con, I am going to ask everyone to select one costume for photos that they absolutely, positively, unquestionably, MUST have. I will make those my priority and then if there is more time for secondary cosplays we can do those as well. That way, everyone gets at least one! (Naturally, there is also the option of setting up private shoots in the weeks between conventions for some fun on-location work, teehee =P)

I am not particularly comfortable making the schedule depend on my availability - you guys are the ones modeling for me after all ^_^ But I think the added flexibility offsets the problems introduced by my dictation of the schedule.

Don't PM me or comment right now on which cosplay is your must-have. I'll ask again before each con so you have plenty of time to decide!

Photo Stuff

I'll be working as fast as I can to get all the photos done. I think I am going to reverse my workflow this time and do the largest sets first since they generally require more time in Photoshop to really perfect. Then I can get the smaller sets posted. I will only be able to do limited work this weekend given a few other things I need to do. Couple more late nights, no big deal =)

Nekocon - Hardcore Conventioneering; Looking Ahead

Picture stuff: This week is a little crazy schedule-wise. It'll likely be two weeks before I can look at and process every photo that I took, but I'll post as I finish sets.

*        *        *

It's been 9 months since I first picked up a camera after years of photographic inactivity. I had no idea it would turn into something so genuinely epic. And I think Nekocon has been an important turning point where I feel completely integrated in con-culture. There are four people I would like to thank for their direct involvement in bringing to life the more artistic aspect of my personality, PhotoNinja: MissDragonblade, for taking a leap and agreeing to model Seto Kaiba for my very first real photoshoot; Kagomechann, for having such a fantastic Imp Midna that the photos on Cosplay.com have stayed on the front page for 5 months (!); and KurzesHaar and Mintflavored for being superb hosts, true friends and introducing me to many more phenomenal individuals.

The Nekocon Synopsis. Had a frantic Thursday evening packing everything to meet KurzesHaar and Minty at Tyson's Corner to form the entity known as the D-Train - a word that must be both bold and italicized to properly emphasize that it is a Juggernaut of Awesome. Met up with lulubird and ayareinami*YAY*, ate some cupcakes, perused the fashion at Forever 21, and then hit the road. Easy drive down to Richmond to meet friends (could someone give me online handles?) who gave me my own bed in their attic, which was very comfortable. Thanks guys =D

Friday we hit the road again to pick up Tenshinoitami1. The drive felt like it lasted all of 5 minutes because of the mutual discovery that we really like cats and, in fact, share some of their feline characteristics. Cheese-kun was also an excellent companion.

When we got to the hotel we discovered that our room had no room number (*cue onimous horror-flick score*) and the door was being supported primarily by its lower hinges. As it turns out this was not a portent of our con experience, lol. Put everything away, geared up for the con, got there, and then had fun standing in the registration line. One thing I like about Neko's registration is that you enter your own information into a computer terminal and then pick up the printed registration at an adjacent table. It works out pretty smoothly although I'm curious why that methodology was chosen.

Anyway, while we were in line I met up with Bur Loire, aka Bur-chan, aka Tree-chan, aka Wait...Is that a Really Pretty Man, Because I Can't Tell?. Chatted for a little bit before I had to get back in line. Had no idea what kind of insanity I had just gotten myself into =P

After the reg line the real fun began with all the picture-taking. I'm glad I didn't do any real scheduling because that would have immediately and violently exploded in my face. I think everything worked out okay, but I'll definitely be perfecting the art of multiple simultaneous photoshoots at upcoming conventions. Tenshinoitami and I ended up ordering exactly the same thing at Mickey-D's for dinner, which was really wierd. Did some more photography, and then put the camera away for the evening in order to partake of Minty's excellent Apple Pie concoction. The hours from approximately 10pm to 12pm the next day will be stricken from the record ^_^

Saturday was all photos, all the time. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to do a mini-shoot with a mutual friend sporting some lovely lolita fashion. That night we also spent some time at the dance which was fun and then hung out with friends on the con floor. I suppose because I was tired I didn't really introduce myself to all of them (which I regret, sorry everyone) but I suspect and hope I will have another opportunity in the near future =)

My convention was - sadly - cut short on Sunday morning. It was a brief blur of activity as I had to drive back home early that morning to make it to a house party celebrating my good friend's engagement.

Shout-outs:

Daggie: Much <3 guys. Thanks for the sandwich!

Tenshinoitami and Vampirelematt: Y'all are so awesome. It was really a pleasure to meet you again, to get to know you, and to take pictures of your masterful costumes. Thank you so much for your patience and willingness to freeze outside.

Tree-chan and Co.: To the silliest group of cosplayers I have ever met: I am so happy I could spend so much time with you guys! Even though I was exhausted I can't express how much fun all three (four? - I lost count) of the 'shoots were.

Our Richmond Friends I can't Name Because This is Public: Thanks for being wonderful hosts =)

My lolita-fashion friend Whom I can't Name for the Same Reason: It was great to meet you! Thanks for standing outside to endure that chilly breeze, the conversation, and I look forward to working with you again ^_^

Sincerely,

'Ninja

Gaming

Just felt like making an update. FYI I should be working on finishing up some pictures over the weekend, including Fire Lily's Tula shoot and Ryuuki's Turks. If I have some time I'll also be delving into the wide world of special effects to make spin-off versions of selected Faris/Terra Final Fantasy anthology pictures. The regular versions will be submitted to CosCom's photoshoots section, where I hope they will receive some attention ^_^

Going through these shoots it seems that the pictures, overall, were much more technically challenging to shoot and edit than Otakon's or T-Mode's. I think the highly unusual lighting situation was the primary contributor. But I suppose as I do this more and more my vision of what the image should look like becomes more specific, despite that I am not really thinking like that while taking the picture. I think I am also more comfortable making ever-more-granular edits to photos. The challenge of editing a picture so thoroughly that the edits are totally invisible is wonderful =)

On a separate matter, the PC game market should get a little more exciting next week with the release of Fallout 3, which I am planning to pick up. I would have gotten Dead Space but I can't stand (non-comedic) horror because it freaks the shit out of me. My paranoia is already at a comfortably high level, thank you. In contrast, Fallout 3 has been developed by Bethesda this time around, and I am looking forward to a similar look-and-feel as Oblivion.

Other than that I have played Call of Duty 4 and various Valve titles as time permits. (Aside: could someone please tell me why CoD's next title is taking it back to WWII? The whole "let's defeat the Germans, Japanese and maybe the Italians" thing is getting old.) I have several others sitting idle, but I don't have time anymore to have them all installed and play them all at regular intervals. It is for that reason that I have not retreated into my Ivory Tower to play Warhammer Online, which I was sure I would pick up but whose time requirements I, again, cannot justify.

So I am looking farther into the future toward the release of Operation Flashpoint 2 and Diablo 3. By the way, if any of you have Diablo2+Expansion I would totally be up for a marathon click-fest, because my right index finger needs re-training. Mostly, however, D's post the other day about his upcoming cosplay made me nostalgic for my dual-axe Barbarian bloodletting machine.

Finally, in the interstice between now and Katsu please let me know if you would like to set up a private photoshoot. I need to try out new camera and lighting techniques while time permits so I can be at my best for the con.

Holy crap, I actually finished it

In an intense marathon session of photo editing today which began at approximately 10:45am this morning I was able to complete Ryuuki and Natalie's photoshoot of Faris and Terra from FFVI. Thanks again to you guys for being so patient and having some truly excellent modeling skills. Oh the DRAMA!
